• Dropr dev/blog

All the official news, updates and tales about Dropr, the multimedia portfolio hosting platform.

Current stage of development: Bikini Monkey (mark I).

Multimedia embeds, over-sharing, tunes and loads of updates

Dropr Beta just got more complete. There are loads of awesome updates and even some of whopping ones. Most importantly…

The first cross-media embeds in the world! (BETA)

Now you can share content from Dropr outside of Dropr. Our second and not last (after Social Network Connections) step on a way to artwork penetration of the web.

Not to bore you with descriptions of the obvious, there’s:

Slideshow

SplashUp! button

The above are the first multimedia embeds, ever.
But there’s also a third one, which takes the first steps on our way to artwork’s penetration of reality…

Embed in Life!
Lets you generate a QR code, raster for printing or vector for messing. You can use these to make sticker, posters, stencils or whatever comes to your mind and add to your artwork, business cards and walls.

And all that comes as a part of our..

Total over-sharing package
There’s a little trumpet icon on top of Dropr portfolios now, hit it to share or embed the content and give someone the gift of exposure. It’s niftily hidden while also always being there.

With..

HTML5 music player which rocks. And jazzes, and brosteps…
Minimalistic and simple, but skillful little beast. It can play the sounds of Dropr on all devices now, it adjusts to size and gives us a lot of future possibilities (you will hear about them).
On thing it lacks is interface clutter, hope you enjoy the sounds from Dropr members even more now!

And…

Loads of UI updates
We’ve updated a lot of bits around the site, including the now more quiet, while always visible sub-nav bar.

(PRO TIP: Click the sub-nav bar’s background to scroll to top)

Also..

Bugs fixed
We’ve fixed all the bugs you’ve reported and improved performance of the site in general.

Hope you like these!

All new content manager!

New content manager

We’ve just released our media manager, a pretty awesome way to organize, upload and control all the creative bits you have online. It’s not only quite a looker, but it’s pretty powerful too.

Some features:

  • All media equal
We don’t charge differently for different media, there are no more ‘dropees’ for your uploads, all you use when uploading now are.. well, your uploads. Every piece you add uses just one upload, no matter whether it’s an image, audio tune or video.
  • All media together
You don’t need to select which type of media you want to upload, just drop a file and Dropr will know what to do about it. You can upload a lot of new file types too, including text, and zip, because…
  • HTML5 can be art too
Dropr is the first platform to host HTML5/JavaScript interactive projects. Just drop a ZIP file with your piece of algorithmic (for example!) art.
  • Drag and drop everything
Drop files from your system, as many as you want at once, don’t worry about file types. After you add your pieces, you can drag them around too, to sort, move between projects or move projects between galleries. It’s nice and smooth, like probably never before on the web.
  • And more
There are quite many othere new things, like custom editing project and piece thumbs.
  • And even much more of more
We have also updated the site with a lot of new small things and fixes. We’ve fixed all the bugs reported by droprs too (thanks!)

So here it is: the content manager for all your creative stuff online. Our early Christmas gift.

(on that note, I’d like to apologize for the serious lack of cool images in this post, but we’re working on a couple of other big nice things and there was no time)

And that’s not all of the gifts. All of our good Cloudmasters get +10 uploads today so that they can test the new manager for free.
As always, please report all problems so we can fix them soon!

.

One thing for sure, this Christmas, dropping will feel like never before.

.

Thanks!

.

.

PS for those hackers: With this update we are beginning to open source bits of Dropr. You can find our new awesome crossbrowser content uploader class called ‘DropZone’ on GitHub. Feel free to use and contribute (MIT licence)!

Thanks again, Dropr crew

Fixed things, Good things & WTFeedbacks

Over past months we’ve been heavily debugging, simplifying and improving the new Dropr app, which now works and looks pretty sweet! We’ve doubled our member/beta tester base and collected quite a bit of feedback from you guys!
Here are some updates:

The Good and Bad words
Since we launched Bikini Monkey mk I we’ve been collecting your opinions through our online survey and the feedback button at the bottom.

The button has proved to be used a lot by you guys, not only to report bugs but also give us some ideas & thanks. We’re going to leave it where it is for another couple of weeks or months.

And the survey gave us some interesting answers too. First of all you seem to love our new interface (thanks :)), but found some things tricky (we addressed most of them with today’s simplification update).

Interestingly, you seem to be happy with the Vimeo connection for hosting videos, so we’ll delay our own video hosting solution and make sure it’s perfect before release (if ever needed :)). As for ‘Who let the dogs out?’ the opinions seem to be largely divided.. we’ll keep asking.

But just for another few days. The WTF 2 survey will be closed soon as we’re working hard on Bikini Monkey mk II now!

Some things changed
We updated Dropr with some quite radical interface changes a couple of hours ago. What’s new:

Simpler UI
We’ve tested quite a few approaches to the UI design and functionality  (as you may have noticed :))  and now we believe we’ve reached the final, most optimal and usable shape of things. It works very well on desktops, tablets as well as mobiles (adjusting for each of course). Among many others, we’ve updated the ‘My Portfolios’ panel to be more handy for people who have just one portfolio on Dropr (large majority at this stage).

Simpler portfolios
We noticed that after some time most of our power users switch to the 3rd layout option and as we’ve been thinking about it for quite a long time..

We did it. Yes. We took something away from you. But we have a feeling you might like it :)

We removed the option to change the layout of a portfolio homepage. Now all projects are always present right there, which makes portfolios simpler to navigate, matches our coming content manager and unifies experience across the network. In exchange we gave you two new options for design customisation: you can display gallery headers or all projects in one grid, and there’s a new thumbnail display mode.

Now Dropr portfolios really are close to the sweet spot between easy navigation and customisation :)

By the way, we promise this was the last such radical change to portfolios layout as we will focus more on details and optimisation from now on.

Faster
Dropr will be much faster now, especially when moving between portfolios.
We’ve also optimised it for mobile browser even more. It’s not perfect yet, but probably better than any other portfolio platform :)

And such
There are many other small and big improvements. Among others, the audio icon looks more like an audio icon now.

There will be a lot of new things coming over next weeks, including new project manager, pretty cool embeds and brand new HTML5 audio player. We’ll keep you posted!

Say hello to Dropr Bikini Monkey (mk I)!

After months of brainstorming and hardcore programming, consulting, redesigning and testing; having Noel’s macbook burned-out (3) 4 times and Matt’s balancing on the verge of death.. We’re releasing something quite exceptional, something we’re quite proud of and something you may like too: a completely rewritten Dropr in its latest and most powerful incarnation, The Bikini Monkey!

What’s new?
Everything, pretty much. Throughout the alpha and early beta releases of Dropr we’ve collected a lot of feedback from members of many backgrounds, media and locations. We’ve mixed it with our own observations and blended into a totally new concept of an online art host. We’ve removed all functionality that wasn’t necessary, then added some new stuff and tweaked until we’ve got something that has more to offer but looks like much less. It’s still fun and interactive but stripped down (almost!) to the sweet minimum. ‘Bikini Monkey’ indeed.

.

Ok, but cut the crap, so what’s new?

In short:

Total Multi-deviceness
Now your Dropr portfolios are delivered to phones, tablets, desktop machines and even fridges (apparently). And all that without a crippled ‘mobile version’ of the site, Dropr just adapts to provide the best looks, highest performance and touch or mouse control on all devices.

New interface
We made it a little bit more standard in some ways so that users at varying levels of computer literacy can find their way around the app easily and to minimise the learning curve, but at the same time we’ve remained innovative and while having less from more, we haven’t reached the bore. It’s very interactive and nicely self-contained. And it looks pretty nice too :)

Multi-portfolio management
You can create and edit many portfolios to maintain all areas of your creation that need to be separate (or control portfolios for many artists if you happen to be a music label manager for example). Without logging in an out, with all updates and control gathered around one Dashboard. All portfolios apart from your main one can be shared with others too.

New portfolio styling
They’re simpler, faster and focus on presenting the content even more. We’ve added some innovative styling settings too, such as background filters. Literally, with 3 clicks you can make your portfolio beautiful – and that’s without themes. We’ve removed them, so that all portfolios are unique.

New Explore
Intelligent suggestions, very fast multi-query sifting and infinite browsing. It might be, that the world hasn’t seen a sexier way to look for creatives. Check it!

New dashboard
We’ve changed the Dashboard entirely. It’s very graphic and minimalistic and gathers all your Dropr activity together with inspiration from the Cup (every 2 hours it refills a project you might like) and followed members. You can even switch it to a gallery mode to remove all social interactions and just browse the inspiring content. Or Splash it up..

Simpler and faster Splash Up!
Splashup is back to fullscreen-only. The in-tab version had some performance issues that were impossible to overcome. Now it’s simpler, faster and embedded in the header bar whenever available.

New account types
Unlike previous invite-only versions, Bikini Monkey lets your sign up immediately.
Anyone can get a Treasure Seeker account and immediately start exploring the clouds of our portfolios. To upload content you will need to upgrade your account to Cloudmaster. This can be done in a few ways; apply to us, collect votes from other Cloudmasters or get invited directly by a Cloudmaster (each one can invite two friends). There’s also another nice account type coming soon: the most powerful and chilled; the Guru.

Better semantic stuff
We’ve improved our AAAAA! (Always Active Art Awesomeness Algorythm!) and STRAW (System That Relates Artists and Work) to serve you some content with more accuracy.

Refreshed identity
It seems like over past months it became quite fashionable to put a droplet in a startup’s logo. What is more, a lot of them looked exactly like our basic shape of a circle mixed with a square (which stood for simplicity and cleanliness).

Not to be confused, we’ve decided to go for something fresher: two droplets. Ha!

And more…
There are enormous shed-loads of updates, little tweaks and brand new ideas – have a look around, you might find a feature you requested :)

.

.

.

What happens now?
For the next few weeks we’ll be testing Dropr to get rid of all bugs we haven’t found yet. Meanwhile, please do overuse the little Bug button in bottom-right corner.

All your feedback helps us make Dropr something amazing!
Since now, we’re also working on the second installment of Bikini Monkey,
the mark II.

The first half of the Bikini Monkey saga brings a powerful base for a lot of innovation and nice new features, which will come in full glory with its second part, the Bikini Monkey mark II, this autumn.

Since today a new survey is available at dropr.com/wtf/2/ – fill it if you would like to give us some feedback and help the project!

.

We hope you like the new app!

Love!

The (amazing) new Dropr

The new is coming

Thanks for all the feedback through our survey, guys!

First of all, we were actually surprised by the amount of positive feedback we’ve got from you – I mean, we know that Dropr is a nice app with a great community, but over past months we’ve found a heck of a lot of things that could be improved and it’s probably not as amazing as it should be – now, that’s going to change!

Not all the feedback was sweet of course – and that’s great, because it has given us something to aim for with the new version. We’ve got a couple of nice ideas from you that will be implemented into the new version too. I would like to thank you for the time you’ve given us (some of you have written multiple pages of text!). Thank you!

We’ve closed the survey about 2 weeks ago and there’s a serious reason for it – the new version is heavily under development :)

Because of the amount of changes, we have decided to divide development into 2 stages (and code-named the release “Bikini Monkey”, this is subject to change though):

Dropr Bikini Monkey Mark I (coming this Spring ekhem, Summer)

We’ve decided to redesign the whole Dropr. Some sentiment aside, it was time for a major re-think of what we’ve been offering to you. The new Dropr is going to be much simpler, much easier, a little bit more conventional where you’d expect it and pretty innovative where it makes sense. It’s going to be a bit of a stretch to call the thing just a website.

Some highlights:

  • Less interface! (& We’re removing some functionality that’s not essential in your and our opinion)
  • Mobile, tablet and weird-resolution friendly
  • Completely rewritten code in the front and in the back
  • Much more speed
  • Brand new (and instant!) exploring
  • New dashboard to keep your updates nicely organized
  • Updated portfolios: A little less functionality, even more focus on content, better design
  • New account types
  • Multi-portolio management (Stage 1)
  • and such

Dropr Bikini Monkey Mark II (this Summer Autumn)

This release will bring a very new portfolio manager and some big new features.

Highlights:

  • Better content management
  • Groups to chat about stuff and share some stuff too
  • Tentacles (Dropr API that rocks!)
  • i18n ( in other words: Dropr en muchos tongues!)
  • A new account type
  • and more

Release of the Stage 2 will be equal to what others would call 1.0 RC, which means Dropr might mature quite soon!

We’ll share some more info and perhaps a few screenshots soon.

Love!
Dropr Crew

Dropr is growing up!

There’s a new (& awesome!) version of Dropr coming in the not too distant future and we’re looking for you good people to let us know what you would love to see in there.

We’ve created a wee survey for you: dropr.com/wtf

Be honest – this is your chance to make your mark on what Dropr is!

Cheers

Cup + new SplashUp!

A couple of days ago we updated Dropr with some new nice features and then improved them a little bit:

Cup of Insipiration

New Cup of Inspiration

This is now located in your dashboard – every hour our clever script will choose a new project to add to your cup.

The choice of a project is based on both what kind of content you interact with on Dropr and current trends, these are both analysed by two applications; the STRAW and a brand new thing we called Always Active Art Awesomeness Algorithm (AAAAA!), together they work their (cl)asses off to serve you some artwork you will very likely find nice.

Interact with artwork on Dropr to teach it what is that you find awesome, the rest will be poured straight into your cup. Yup!

Brand new Splash Up!

New Splash Up

We’ve practically rebuilt the whole Splash Up! application to make it a real second layer of Dropr and a standalone art exploration tool.

The new:

  • Splash Up! opens in-window now, so that you don’t have to close it if you want to change a tune on Spotify and if you want you can have many open in tabs. The fullscreen mode is still here for you to enjoy some art with no distraction
  • You can navigate! you can switch between views, view portfolios, galleries, projects and others and even go back, because:
  • It saves your browsing history so you can always come back where you were, if you want to
  • When you move from one place to another and close Splash Up, Dropr will navigate to the last location too
  • It’s got a music player! Now you can listen to music and watch visuals in fullscreen mode . It’s 5-media at last :)
  • We made it even faster (and someone could say, more beautiful)

Now, before you ask: Why The Flash?!

Well, we’ve built a HTML/JavaScript version of Splash Up! to test if it’s time for a switch-over but its performance was much worse than what we can get with Flash. So for these three reasons:

  • geriatric-turtle-tempo
  • no nice fullscreen mode
  • some browsers and older computers simply would never cope

we decided that a HTML Splash Up has to wait for the better times.

Now you can enjoy it fast and fullscreen and get lost browsing through splashes of artwork on Dropr.
And for those that can’t get Flash.. we’ll figure something out :)

New music player

New music player

It looks a bit better and works way better. Now also available in Splash Up! :)

Other stuff

We have also fixed and improved a lot of other, mostly small, things. Thanks for feedback!

Dropr DARE BEAR has arrived!

Dropr is BETA! Dropr is DARE BEAR!

We’ve improved and fixed shedloads of stuff over past few weeks. In short:

  • cleaned up, simpler and more graphic dashboard
  • new homepage for those who are logged out
  • better style editor with new themes & style settings
  • better project manager
  • faster portfolios
  • a lot of styling & UI changes to make things even simpler
  • and it even seems like there are no bugs (for the moment ;)) !

Massive thanks to all our alpha testers for helping us to get Dropr tested and improved. As per the email some time ago, all of you get extra Dropees and invites :)

Have fun!

Dropr Crew

Hello, STRAW!

For the last few months we’ve been quietly working on a new feature – STRAW (System That Relates Artists & Work).

STRAW does exactly what it says – relates artists and work. It does this by analysing user interactions with Dropr. This makes it easy for us to suggest things to you that you are likely to like… For example, next time you are looking at a project you like, have a look out for the ‘Near By’ section near the bottom of the page.

We’ve also integrated STRAW in to our exploring system (click the cloud icon on the right hand side of the page)

STRAW is still in it’s infancy and the more Dropr grows the more accurate STRAW will become. Also the more you interact with Dropr the more it can suggest to you – so you better get active!

Apart from inventing the STRAW we’ve been continuously working on making Dropr faster and stabler.  For example:

  • AJAX Portfolios – this means the whole page doesn’t need to reload when you browse a portfolio – saving you time.
  • Localized Content Delivery – now you don’t have to wait for our files to travel half way across the world to get to you – we now keep them in several locations.

If you encounter any bugs while browsing Dropr – please let us know!

Dropr is more complete: Collectives!

We’ve just updated Dropr with a massive new thing: Collective pages!

If you belong to a band, an art collective or have a small creative business and would like to expose common work in one place, now you can, in a super-clean and easy way.

Multiple accounts aren’t needed to upload your personal work and things you’ve created with friends – you can create and belong to many collectives while keeping your personal portfolio for yourself.

If you have a creative business, you can create a portfolio for your company while having all your employees linked to it. If you are an agent now you can maintain portfolios of all your clients in a few clicks – and always get a bit of inspiration in your personal dashboard of course! If you are anyone else, we’re sure you’ll find your own way to use the thing :)

That’s not all, we’ve added some other new things too:

  • Project background colors. Yup, you’re not stuck to black anymore (but it’s still the default one)
  • Better interface. There’s even less of it (and pieces got bigger on project pages!). Also, Dropr’s got a better header.
  • Improved interaction. Loads of improvements, one worth mentioning is all navigation will adapt for touch screens now.
  • Splash Up! blowing. When in the application, press space to find what’s hidden.
  • You can change your address/login. Just go to settings to do so
  • It’s even faster! And soon will be even faster than it is fast now :)

As always, some bugs are possible – report when you see something!

Thanks!
